How Your Home Can Boost Emotional Well-being
Your surroundings can have a significant effect on your mental well-being. Even if you are not aware of it, your home affects your mood. In fact, it can cause you to have depression and to lose your sense of creativity. A home can make you feel anxious and upset if it is not set up correctly. But that means that the opposite is true. You can use your home to create a mood you want to feel and reignite your passion for life. To help get you thinking, here are some ways you can use your home to boost your emotional well-being.
A Minimalist Mindset
If this is a new concept to you, you may well be able to begin adopting a minimalist mindset n the home and then expanding it out to your everyday life. Minimalism is about only keeping hold of things, people and ideas, etc., that are still of value in your life. That means getting rid of everything that no longer holds value. It is a way of freeing your mind and giving you space and time to breathe and focus on the things that matter. You can start a minimalist mindset by decluttering your living spaces. Depending on where you are on the decluttering process, it may well take you a few sweeps to get rid of everything that needs to go. Furniture, broken things, old things, rubbish you hold onto for some reason all needs to go. You’ll find that by doing this, you are creating space, reducing stress, anxiety and even depression. You are no longer bound to things that stop you from moving on in your life. Your home is, in essence, a newer and less claustrophobic beast.
Indoor Plants
If you want something simple that will have the effect of boosting your mood, then adding plants is a must. If you live in the city and don’t have any outdoor space, then you should really consider plants as you need a little nature in your life. Plants are a natural way to create calm, reduce your stress levels, improve your concentration, and they are able to boost your creativity. However, they all have the effect of cleaning the air by removing toxins and increasing oxygen levels.
Repair things
If you have a lot of broken things such as appliances, light switches, plug sockets, broken doors or cupboards, etc., this will be affecting your mental well-being. Write a list of all the things that need repairing and begin ticking these things off the list. By doing it this way, you will be able to physically see that you are making progress, which will boost you. Also, by finally getting things repaired, you will be improving your living conditions. Think about his like you heating systems, and solar panelling too which can be repaired too. Remember that even if you think that you are great at ignoring problems, they are already in your subconscious, which means you will be negatively affected.

YES… such a great idea. During the pandemic, we worked on home repairs and I started cleaning things out. I felt so productive. And where would I be without my indoor plant babies?

Our home is the most comfortable place we can have and it has the most effect on our mental health and well-being. I need to make a list and repair stuff. I know I’ve been putting off things like this and I think it affects my mood everyday.
Repairs needing to be done can be cumbersome to the mind. Especially, if we keep putting them off to some unknown future time.
This is definitely something I learned from Covid, since we spend much more time at home. These are great tips – a home should be a sanctuary!
We spend more time at home than ever before. We need our homes to be a place of peace.

I like making a list and checking things off. I’m horrible at getting things done otherwise.
Making a list, and checking it twice is a great help for keeping on track.
Those are some great tips to keep in mind and it’s a good thing I’m already doing the 1st and 2nd ones. We just moved to a new house so there are plenty of things to fix and renovate.
There are always things that you can do to make your home the way you want it. Enjoying the process is important.
I totally agree with this. Your home is the safe space that you can create to suit you and your emotional needs.
Creating your safe space allows you to feel calm and happy within the walls of your largest investment.
I am obsessed with indoor plants. My home looks like a forest now because I have so many plants 🙂
Alita, that is so healthy. I would love to see pictures.
I just bought my first plant a few weeks ago. I heard that it’s a great way to boost your mood!
Plants are a terrific mood booster. They even love when you talk to them.
I’m trying to become a minimalist b/c we have so much stuff! It’s been a year-long journey, but I’m making headway and feel so much better about it.
That is hard work but getting pared down can also be very freeing.
