Do you wish that your kids really understood where food comes from?
When children understand where their food comes from they are more likely to try new foods. As well, they are more likely to lead healthful lifestyles full of a rainbow of nutrients and flavors.
How do you help kids to understand where food comes from?
It is actually easier, and more fun, thank you think!
Modern society gives us great resources and that includes online games.
Yes, that is right.. I am suggesting online games as a great way to educate your kids as to where food comes from.
In particular, I really like culinaryschools.org. This website offers 100 + games to help kids learn about the source of their food supply, how to farm food, how to cook food and even how to make a living from food.
I honestly love that! I learned about culinary careers by enrolling in culinary school, spending tons of hours practicing the craft and eventually learning that I do not want a restaurant career. Your child may be able to get the same result simply by playing some games.
Imagine the money that you can save?
Imagine the interest you can spark?
There are many games and many categories:
- Cooking and Kitchen Work – track multiple tasks in the kitchen and learn how to follow a basic recipe
- Food Education Games – learn about healthy foods versus unhealthy foods & recycle waste
- Serving Eaters – make sandwiches or play a waiter
- Farming – familiarizes players with farms, farm animals and farming.
However, I think what I like the best is that even as someone educated in the culinary arts and in nutrition, I found some interesting lessons and fun games!
Let me introduce you to a few favorites.
I enjoyed Coffee Shop, partially because I really like coffee. However, the real reason is that I thought it was a pretty neat way to learn about tracking inventory, adjusting prices and figuring out cost. Considering I had a $6.00 drip coffee recently, I am really on this kick.

Plus my Cafe was called Cafe Calypso. That is, of course, fun.
Another favorite was Open Restaurant. That one may have been attractive to me as I have been watching Top Chef with my oldest foodie recently.

At any rate, there is something for everyone and there are even weight loss calculators, links to school and some pretty interesting blog posts. All in all, I do recommend to check out this free resource. It certainly brings math to life.

Exactly. I think that we would all make different decisions if we understood these nuances.

It is a fun playing and learning opportunity.
I think it’s important to teach them that. This way, they will be careful what to eat.
Exactly. In this way they can have a much better appreciation.
Oh i already came across this website and it is indeed very useful for my little niece. She’s 3 years old and becoming more and more curious about various things. She has been enjoying some of the simulation games from this site.. highly recommended
I am so excited to hear your experience. Thank you for sharing.
I definitely think we need to be more forthcoming with explaining to kids where their food comes from. Especially when it comes to meat. While it’s not something we like to talk about, we’re all much too disconnected from the whole process.
This is a really solid point. We have become completely disconnected with the sacrifices to bring food to our tables.
This is such a great idea for fostering entrepreneurship and helping kids understand how economics work. I think it’s a great idea.
Fun games that help kids to gain deeper understanding offer wonderful benefit.
This is so interesting and important too. Our kids should be aware of the hard work behind the food they are getting. Great post!!
When the kids are educated about their food they are more respectful in their eating and waste.
I love the games they offer on their page. I really like the penguin cafe. it’s what the kids are playing now
That is awesome to hear. The penguins have a ton to teach.
It’s important to teach our kids where food comes from and let them understand. this encourages them to have a positive attitude towards food.
Yes, and with that positive attitude also comes greater respect.
