Pastor Rick Warren’s son committed suicide and a whole community mourned.
Saddleback Church is an evangelical Christian megachurch in Southern California. Pastor Rick Warren is the head of this church.
Of course, you may know him better as the best-selling author of The Purpose Driven Life. A book that at this point has sold over 30 million copies.
Saddleback Church’s attendance numbers over 20,000 each week. Presently there are approximately 80,000 members. Pastor Rick and his wife, Kay, are actively involved in the church community. They are also heavily involved in the surrounding community and, above all, in the lives of their children.
However, none of this was able to protect them from the news that no parent ever wants to hear. Those words tell you that your beloved child has taken their own life.

Matthew Warren, 27 years old, had suffered from years of depression and mental illness. Regrettably, it had become too much for him to bear.
As a result, after an evening out with his parents, he took his own life.
“No words can express the anguished grief we feel right now. He struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts,” Pastor Warren said in an emotional letter to his congregation. Adding that “In spite of America’s best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided.”
No one is safe from this type of tragedy.

The photo went viral. As a consequence 18 months later she hung herself. Presumably, she could not see a way to live with the continued bullying and her deep depression. She died on Sunday, April 7, 2013. Rehtaeh was just 17 years old.
