What Could That Lump Under The Skin Be?
If you have run your hands across your skin and found that you have a strange gathering or tissue somewhere, don’t panic. It’s not always going to be the worst, it could just be a few other things. However, none of these things are really good news because they signal something going on in your body. On one hand, you have nothing to fear. However, on the other, you have to pay close attention to why your body is reacting in a certain way.
Let’s take a look at the possible reasons why you have a lump forming under your skin.
Dermatofibroma
This is a reddish gathering of tissue that is just below the skin. It can also form on the surface of the skin. This is usually due to an insect bite or an injury. It can even be as simple as from a splinter. This is a tissue that will not form into cancer, so don’t worry. The body is reacting to some kind of invasive item that is causing a lot of the tissue in the area to become irritated. And so, it sends a plethora of cells to the area which causes the reddish spot-like tissue to gather.
You can treat this by freezing it with liquid nitrogen. This is something usually only found in the private healthcare market. It will likely not be covered in your insurance plan but may qualify for a Flex Spending Account expense. You can shave off the top layers of growth and use corticosteroid injections to lessen its size. You can also just remove its center and the rest will collapse and slowly fade away.
Scar tissue
If you have had some kind of muscle tear injury, scar tissue is something you can expect to deal with. Even if you have not, if you work out a lot, you will find that a small area of scar tissue will begin to form around the muscles you use. The scar tissue is hard but not solid, it can be squashed using just your fingers. However, it grows back and it can limit your movement. Not to mention, it can be irritating when it rubs against your clothes or against a hard surface like a wall or workout mat. You can use massage techniques to loosen the scar tissue and allow for more blood to the muscle and increase your range of movement.
A hardened lump
Many people know that a hard lump in a more fleshy part of the body, such as the breast, back, or chest, is something to worry about. Sometimes it is the worst of all and you are dealing with a tumor. Speaking with a specialist cancer clinic is highly recommended. They will use specialist equipment brands like Thermo Fisher Scientific produce, for cancer treatment. Their products have been designed for precision oncology research and treatment. The newest technologies are superior to radiation treatments of old, such as chemotherapy. Nowadays, precision equipment only targets cancer cells and doesn’t kill healthy cells.
Don’t panic if you can feel a lump on your body. Do the proper research to see what it’s all about and contact your doctor if you do feel that it could be a serious health concern.
It can also be worth checking what you are covered for with your current health insurance or looking into a new premium with a provider such as Florida Health Insurance, so you know what you can expect to be covered going forward should you require further treatments or tests.

I’m constantly checking for lumps. While I know that sounds like I’m paranoid, it’s simply because I’ve witnessed too many people contracting cancer beause they haven’t been checking, or haven’t pushed their agenda with the GP.
Nyxie, you are fastidious in your attention to your health care and needs. As you said, many are not.
It’s good to be cautious and it’s better to be safe than not. Will keep those points in mind.
Better to be safe than sorry, that is for sure.
Those are some great points to keep in mind and thanks for sharing this informative post with us.
You are very welcome.
This is such an eye opener. I have to also consult with my dermatologist. Learned something new today!
It is never a bad idea to consult with your doctor.
I am not a medical person that’s why I rely immediately on doctors when something happened and yeah, sometimes I do panic first. Glad to learn something new today from you. Thank you for sharing some information.
Going straight to panic mode is super easy to do. Pulling yourself back from that is hard work.
It’s so easy to panic when you find a lump! Thank you for empowering us with knowledge and encouraging us to not panic, but instead gain knowledge and speak with our doctor. You rock Dr. Elise! <3
It is so easy.. Knowledge and support from your medical provider are a great combination.
It is good to have an idea of what something is like this. I always do a lot of research when I’m not sure what something is.
Research and knowledge provides power and big benefit.
I have a friend who found a lump on his arm. He had it biopsied, and it turned out to be a cyst, but he was very worried until he got the results.
Waiting for results is one of the hardest things to do.
Lumps can be so scary! I had a lump once, and I was horrified. It turned out to be nothing, but man, was I scared until I got the info back.
I am happy to hear that you found it was nothing. However, getting to the point in between being confronted with a potential diagnosis and being given the actual diagnosis is seriously murky water.
I love that you gave a few examples of what a lump could be. Of course, it’s best to see a doctor, but in the meantime, it’s nice to have some kind of idea of what you might be dealing with until you know for sure.
A bit of an idea of what you may be looking at can be helpful but the doctor is the one with the info. 🙂
Glad you have shared this info. Most of the time it is nothing to worry about. I love the saying, if you hear hooves galloping, it is most likely a horse, not a zebra 😉
Marybeth, thank you for sharing that saying with me (and my readers), I had never heard of it before.
I think my mind always thinks the worst as soon as I see or feel something. That’s why it’s important not to jump to conclusions.
You are definitely not alone in that.
This is great to know. I remember having a tiny lump somewhere in my upper arm but it eventually disappeared. I was quite in panic initially but ignored it eventually because it wasn’t painful.
I would imagine that was rather worrisome.
Massage on scar tissue is an important thing, not only to free up movement but also to change our relationship with our scars. We can see them as a bad thing, but we can turn it into good. It’s all about mindset and I feel like massage helps in the process of turning that around.
Jamie, how we feel about ourselves has a deep impact on all healing.
This is great information to know. I think we automatically assume the worst when it probably isn’t anything serious.
We do assume the worst. It is unfortunate that we are sometimes correct. However, it is very fortunate that most of the time it is not as bad as we may have thought.
