There A Variety Of Ways To Celebrate Valentine’s Day Around The World

A Story About Valentine's Day and how it is celebrated around the world. Click To Tweet

America – Cards, flowers, and chocolates are the most popular offerings. Fancy dinners, weekends away and couple massages are also popular gifts. Many people will use this time to make their feelings towards someone known.

MexicoDía de San Valentin is the celebration of the Valentine’s Day holiday.  The more common verbiage used is El Día del Amor y la Amistad. The meaning of which is the “day of love and friendship.” Romantic Liaisons will often receive flowers, candies, and balloons from their romantic partners. It is also common to show appreciation for friends.

Saudi Arabia – In Saudi Arabia Valentine’s Day is banned. Government officials call the celebration of such a holiday a sin. The idea behind this is that it “encourages immoral relations between unmarried men and women.”

Italy – Baci by Perugina is the most popular gift in Italy. Baci is the Italian word for “love and kisses.” Perugina offers these sweet candies wrapped in a note of love.  Italians do believe in bigger is better. They also believe that the bigger the chocolate that you give, the stronger the love that you will have.

France – The French have a year-round concentration on love. Due to this the holiday is not quite as well celebrated as in other areas of the world. However, this is the most popular day for marriage proposals and the French claim to have created the first Valentine’s Day card.

I would love to hear your Valentine’s Day traditions.

  1. It’s always interesting to find out how holidays are celebrated in other parts of the world! I did a paper/project in college one year on Christmas around the world. I made a gingerbread house for my professor – of course that helped my grade!

  2. Interesting article. I was in Mexico last year for Valentines Day and it was a big deal there. I saw lots of balloons and stuffed animals.
