Hmmm, I suppose our excitement should be reason #1 that you should attend the inaugural event but I do have so many reasons to share.
A little back story first.
I am a mom of three young adults and I have worked with families almost my entire life.
You can read my full story HERE but I do offer a brief overview, and my insight, below.
Prior to working in the juvenile detention system, I did many of the jobs that girls of my generation, and in my community, did to earn extra income.
I was a babysitter, a nanny and a “Mother’s Helper” working with intact upper-middle-class families who were seemingly happy.
However, even back then I found the title of “Mother’s Helper” to be pretty odd. Wasn’t I also helping dad when I was taking care of the kids and the home?
It seemed that there was always a definitive division in household chores and parenting duties. I found that to be interesting and I reflected on it often as I considered if I wanted to have kids once I was a bit older.
My final job before the juvenile detention system was with a family that was quite different than any I had worked for before.
Dad shared at least half of the work, he was fully and completely involved and he had a very close relationship with his child. It was admirable but yet it was not. I admired it but his community did not.
I then worked in the juvenile detention system as a Youth Counselor. My job was to help the children to express themselves and to help bridge the gap of communication between them and their legal guardian. Sometimes this was a mom, sometimes dad, sometimes both. Other times it was grandparents or other relatives. I loved my work but it was very difficult.
Now we fast forward through years of experience and add in the unique experience of being a parent.
Mr. Ho, affectionately know in this blog as “the hubby” or “the Mr.”, and I became parents in 1995.
In many ways, we were a traditional family (except in the fact that we are different ethnicities and raised in different religions).
I worked through my pregnancy and even for the first months after our baby boy was born. Then the Mr. and I made the choice for me to be a Stay-At-Home-Mommy. It was a wonderful choice for us.
Eventually, I became a Work-At-Home Mommy. This unfolded rather naturally as my neighbor had gone through a very tough divorce and was desperate to leave her baby with someone she trusted. I loved doing this. This little guy grew to be a wonderful friend to our oldest son.
Word spread and I had more parents asking me to help with their kids and a licensed child care was born. It was so wonderful, I loved working with these kids and helping such a diverse group of parents. Over time, my kids got older (as they do) and I shifted a bit but always stayed true to my heart and was always working to help individuals and families.
It was sad to me that at times there was much support in the world of parenting and at other times such a terrible lack of support. It bothered me that parents judged other parents, mothers judged mothers and fathers judged fathers. I worried that people were not getting the resources that they need to be the very best parents that they can be.

Amazing! I know nothing about traveling all over the country, what a wonderful looking place to explore.
At present, most of us know very little about world travel. Perhaps when the pandemic is over this can change for you.

I admire your work in this field, this is wonderful.
Thank you.
It’s a little far away for me to attend, from Australia, but I wish you much success with this inaugural event. I’d just moved to Australia when my first child was born so I had no family support and the friends I had here, I’d met back in UK. They were all single and saving for the next travels. No internet then, and $2 a minute phone calls to UK so I had to go it alone.
Thank you. Perhaps we will be in Australia in the future. I hope no one ever feels they have to “go it alone” again.
Hello Elise ! This United We Parent sounds like a wonderful event! Thanks for sharing it as well as your story with us here today. Have a Super Weekend..
Chery :))
It is my pleasure. Thanks for your support.
Hi Elise
Never heard of such an event before. Great message!
All the best!
Thank you
Hi Elise mam, Wonderful article with Great message. Thanks for sharing all the best 🙂
Thank you for your support.
I don’t have kids yet, but I’ll have to start thinking about this!
Attending before the wee ones arrive, or even before deciding to have them, is a brilliant idea.
I had no idea this even existed! Definitely going to show my mom this! Thank you!
Wonderful, thank you.
Sounds like a wonderful Event for parents I wish I could go Elise
Thank you so much. I wish you could come to.
Parenting is the most important job we ever do in life. Anything that can support people in that endeavor is great.
We agree completely.
Have a wonderful event! It’s always great to see groups supporting fellow parents.
Thank you. We are in agreement.
Is that really 10 reasons? Sounds more like 9. What a fabulous opportunity for parents to grow and develop.
Well #10 can be your reason 🙂 10. A fabulous opportunity for parents to grow and develop.
Thank you for being here 🙂
This sounds like a fantastic event. Parenthood can be so isolating and we can face such judgement at times, which I find quite bizarre really when it’s the most natural thing that we do in the world. The more support the better I say. You have such a wealth of experience and I really admire you for reaching out to support other parents in such an inclusive and empowering way. Thanks for linking to #DreamTeam and good luck with your event! x
The judgment that people can face as parents makes me sad. It serves no good purpose. Thank you so very much. I am honored by your feedback.
This looks like a wonderful event well thought out and with great content. I wish you the best on it!
Thank you for the feedback, We so appreciate all input.
Hmm… this looks like an interesting idea. Where can I find more information about the event? Also, will this be streamed for people who cannot attend?
Thank you. We will not be streaming this event as we feel it is so important to create personal connections. We do have an awesome podcast that will be announced in the near future. To find out more about our SoCal Event you can click HERE.
I find it very inspiring that you and your husband are from very different backgrounds, that type of diversity gives me a lot of hope in the world. I wish I could attend this event, but best of luck!
I wish you could attend to 🙂 Thank you for your comments and also the feedback on the Mr. and I. Our diversity has definitely brought some challenges but it has also brought my biggest joys.
So glad I stopped in to read this!
As am I. Thank you.
I’d never heard of United We Parent before reading your article, but it sounds like an amazing cause! I work in juvenile justice as well, and can attest how important it is for parents to have support for the sake of the students. I wish I was in California so I could attend! Best of luck with the Inaugural Event.
That is OKAY. It is our job to make sure people know about us. I wish that you could attend too and I certainly appreciate your vote of confidence. It is especially meaningful to hear how important you think that it is. Thank you.
Loving your message !
Loving your passion! Go girl
Thank you so much. When it feels right all the way down to your core it is easy to have passion.
Loving your passion!
It sounds like an amazing event. And even experienced parents can learn something. Plus, a comedy show, yay! 🙂
Thank you. I agree that all parents can learn something more. That is true for the experts, for the newbies and for everyone in between. (Plus a comedy show – YAY!)
This sounds like such a great event! I would love to attend but alas. Any chance of some YouTube presence post-event?
We have visions of sharing in other ways in the future and will even have parenting tips coming up from our experts. That will be on this blog so stay tuned.
Loved hearing your backstory Elise! I could relate in many ways too, being a stay-at-home then work-from-home mommy. Really wish I could attend this event, it sounds awesome!!
Randi, I so wish you could too. You would be so fun to have there and a great person for other parents to connect to.
Up until now I had no idea what this was. Very informative. Thank you.
I am thrilled to be able to share it.
This sounds like a good event! good luck with it all! #dreamteam
Thank you. We are quite excited. After the Los Angeles event we plan on expanding to other areas.
This sounds like a fantastic event. I think most parents need support. And, while I’m not a parent, it makes me sad to see parents judging other parents. The answer that is right for one isn’t necessarily right for all. You have to find what will work for you.
Erica, I adore your comment. It makes us sad to see all the judging too. It really helps no one, least of all the kids.
