Post-Thanksgiving & Holiday Decorating

Today, I share a post from post-Thanksgiving 2011.

I have changed nothing about the original post-Thanksgiving blog post other than the blog title.

I hope that you will enjoy.

The day after Turkey Day was a lovely day.

It was also a day to consider holiday decorating.

We did have to spend some time cleaning and dealing with a few issues but we also relaxed, enjoyed leftovers, and spent time together as a family.

When day turned to night I decided that I wanted to do some holiday decorating on the inside of the house. The outside decorating was already complete.

My mother-in-law saw that we use an artificial tree and immediately expressed her opinion.

She believes that real is better.

With much patience, I explained that we use artificial for five reasons.

  1. Artificial is cleaner
  2. This makes it less work through the holiday.
  3. The lights are built into it.
  4.  It is easier.
  5. Our son is not allergic to it.

I did not really sell her on the first four reasons. However, the last reason won her over to my side.

After getting the tree set up we hung the ornaments. We also reminisced about what each ornament represents for us. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care and the menorah was returned to its rightful spot. We set out our Chanukah house, our Christmas house, and our ceramic grocery store. Added to all of these festive items were my collections of dreidels and snow globes. I hope to add to the dreidel collection this year. Last year, I did not. Unfortunately,  I did not find anything that really excited me.

As I look around my home, I feel joy emanating from all of these lovely memories.

The one that makes me laugh is the Buddha who is now holding a Chanukah Bear and wearing a Santa hat.

This is a true expression of my household and what holiday decorating looks like for us.

  1. Decorating for Christmas is my favorite thing to do. The best time spent with the family. I wish we could just leave the decorations all year round 😀 Christmas decorations make the home feel a lot more cozier. I’m always very disheartened when I have to take the decorations down.
Reading your post has made me start counting down to Christmas already :D. Loved the post.

    Love,
    Sandra.

  2. Hey Elise! WOWSY, Thanksgiving Eve! You Rock Girlfriend! Myself, well I don’t do a whole lot of holiday decorating as I am not home a lot during the month of December! I do have a small artificial tree but doubt it will get out of the bx this year!

Thank you for sharing your memories with us.. Chery :))

  3. I love this post, and I know exactly what you mean about the feeling you get from getting out the holiday decorations! You handled your MIL nicely 🙂 . I admit to being a tad jealous of you and everyone else who can spend their post-T’giv weekend doing this – I would absolutely LOVE to do the same, but we’re always 5 hours from home for T’giv (Wed-Sun) with my in-laws, so it always means I have to wait til the week after to get started – never quite the same, some of the momentum has gone and it eats into the work week.

  4. I use an artificial tree as well for all those reasons! It just keeps it simple and more relaxing not having to go out, spend money on a tree, and then worry about watering it and keeping it alive. Whatever makes the holidays easier and more enjoyable, is always something I want to do!

  5. A wonderful post that expresses the true meaning of the holidays – spending time with family. Family members are not always going to agree – I’m sure the artificial vs real tree debate goes on in many households 🙂 – but what is most important is to spend time together and make nice memories

  6. It’s just my mom and me (and on weekends my niece) in our home. For the past couple of years, we haven’t decorated much for Christmas, and before that, I did the majority of the decorating. However, it’s always a fun time coming together and decorating because we laugh, joke, fuss a little, and enjoy each other’s company.
