Oil Pulling, also called Kavala Graha or Gandusha, is the ancient Ayurvedic practice of holding plant based oils in the mouth and then swishing it around the mouth and pulling the oil through the teeth.
Oil Pulling takes a bit of practice. Your mouth may become tired until you build up the muscles that will allow you to oil pull. It is generally recommended to pull for 20-30 minutes.
Oil pulling can be transformative in several ways.
- Detoxification. We pick up toxins from the air we breathe, the food we eat, the products we use and the chemicals in the air. These need to leave the body and one way to make this happen is through the mouth.
- Energizing. When our bodies are full of toxins energy needs to be pulled from other important areas of the body to try and fight the offenders. This can result in low energy levels. When the toxins are removed the body can get back to its work and your energy may skyrocket.
- Skin Clearing. The toxin removal from the body can help with the reduction of skin inflammation, rashes and acne.
- Boost Immune System. As your body does not need to fight so hard against toxins it can do the work that it is meant to do.
- Overall Oral Improvement. The properties of a high quality oil can brighten and clean teeth, freshen breath and reduce your chances of cavities. This is achieved through the removal of bacteria including Streptococcus mutans which is a major tooth decay contributor.
Oils of benefit to use for this practice include olive, sesame, sunflower, palm or coconut. Due to the many benefits of coconut oil this would be my top recommendation.
Be sure not to swallow the oil after your new oil pulling habit. This oil has been removing toxins from your body and we do not want to reintroduce those into your system.
When finished pulling the oil should be spit into a garbage can. Do not spit the oil into your sink or toilet as it will clog your system.
If you have oil pulled I would love to hear about your experience. If you have not, does this post make you want to try?

I first heard about oil pulling on a friend’s Facebook post earlier this year. I did try it for about a week using coconut oil. I do not recall why I stopped doing it–probably ran out of coconut oil. I have a lot of things that I like to do first thing in the morning; however, there is just not enough time to do them all.
I find that a great time to do the morning oil pulling is while I am showering and/or drying my hair. Perhaps this will work for you.
Hi Elise 🙂
I have personally never tried this 😉 Never heard of “oil-pulling” before I read your post….sounds like something I should check more into 😉
Thanks for sharing the benefits of doing this!
I will be very excited to hear your feedback.

Thank you. I am happy to see you here.
Hi Dr Elise
This is a new concept for me and I never did hear about such thing till I read this post. Thanks for sharing. Take Care
You are so very welcome.I hope that you will try it.
Hi Elise.
I tried this and I couldn’t get use to the bla, non taste in my mouth… however, I do use it daily as a skin moisturizer – love it. It’s light than olive oil, and I think I’m using 100%. Olive oil has been cut with a lot of other oils and most of it is not 100% – sadly.
I am sorry that oil pulling did not work out for you. It does offer so many befits as does the topical use of coconut oil and other internal uses.
Hi Elise,
I like oil pulling and do it sometimes with coconut oil .
It feels good and is very beneficial. I heard amazing
stories about and how it helped others . why not doing
it ,it can not harm and only can be good for us .
Thank you for telling all the benefits here.
