How You Can Move To A New Home & Be Healthy and Happy

By Constance Ray

Taking advantage of a major life transition, such as a move to a new home, as a time to make positive changes in your life is an excellent game plan.

It is a chance to start over and replace bad habits with positive ones and change your life for the better.

You get a fresh start to relieve stress and make healthier choices to improve your physical and mental health.

You can start by making your home stress-free to improve your overall happiness.

Leave the Baggage Behind to Reduce Stress

When you move to a new home, you get the chance to start anew. Living a healthy life requires reducing stress, Chronic stress can lead to muscle tension, headaches, migraines, heart issues, adrenal fatigue, nausea, obesity, and loss of energy. The less stress you have, the healthier you are mentally and physically.

If you feel stressed, take the opportunity to leave some baggage behind.

First, sort your belongings and discard those that remind you of a toxic relationship or that you have not used for at least six months.

The more clutter you have, the more stress you have. Moving to a new home gives you the chance to assess your belongings and sell, donate, or trash items that bring you down. You’ll be doing yourself a favor by taking fewer items to your new home and making it clutter-free from the start.

Of course, after the move-in period, you need to keep your home free of clutter.

One of the easiest ways to keep your home tidy is to live within your means, Second, allow the size of your home to dictate how much you put in it. When you feel like your closet or cupboards are getting too small, purge again. You’ll make it easier to find a place for everything and stay organized so you can keep your stress at bay.

Create a Healthy Environment

After you’ve completed the first step of keeping your new home clutter-free to reduce stress, start working to create a healthy environment to improve your mental health.

[ctt template=”8″ link=”EePOj” via=”no” nofollow=”yes”]Your home should be a sanctuary that makes you feel good and contributes to your overall happiness.[/ctt]

While you may not be able to make every room a haven, you should create at least one happy zone that promotes peace and joy.

Take advantage of a small area in your new home by making it your spot. Do not take any work, bills, or other stress-inducing items into your happy zone. Paint it in your favorite color or fill it with pillows or accents that reflect your style. Add a plant, since studies show exposure to nature improves overall mental health by improving mood and reducing stress. Finally, add soft, cozy fabrics, your favorite scents in an essential oil diffuser, or a speaker to listen to soothing music.

The goal is to create a space all your own that is stress-free and that will reenergize you to help you combat fatigue.

Utilize Your Kitchen for Healthy Living

Kitchen counters and tables become dumping grounds for bills, mail, and other items.

Keep your kitchen clutter-free so you don’t feel stress or fatigue as soon as you come home.

Organize your new kitchen in a functional way. Place a lazy Susan near the oven with your most-used spices or cooking oils. Hang aprons and potholders on pegs or cup hooks at least two feet away from the range. Put cooking tools in a drawer or containers near your range. Install drawer dividers and shelf organizers to maximize the space in your drawers and cabinets.

Another way to promote healthy living in your kitchen is to allow as much natural light into space as possible. If you can afford it, paying for a window replacement to give you bigger windows, and more access to light is ideal, otherwise the below might help.

Remove heavy window treatments from windows in and around the kitchen. Place an arrangement of succulents in the middle of your table or island to add a natural touch. Keep fresh fruit and veggies in a bowl on your counter so you will snack on healthy whole foods rather than chips or cookies.

Moving to a new home gives you ample opportunity to replace bad habits with positive ones and make healthier choices.

Declutter to reduce stress, improve your mental health, and create a healthy living environment so you can lead a happier, healthier life.

What are your best tips for keeping a happy and healthy home?

  1. I definitely agree that the state of your living space can have an impact on your mind! I always try and keep things clean and organised, especially my desk area! Great post!

  2. Not doing homework or work of any kind in bed always helps me. That way, I have a clear division between work space and sleeping space!

  3. I haven’t moved to any house but definitely will follow these steps when i do and also the Healthy Environment is first thing we look at if we gonna move to a new house.

  4. I go through our apartment twice a year and get rid of “stuff” that we haven’t looked at or used in a while. I love living in a clutter free environment and there is just something freeing about getting rid of “stuff”.

  5. Love this! Love the idea of making your home stress free and de-cluttering. It’s really good advice, that leads to more long term peace and happiness.

  6. Hi Elise,

great post! I always had a “happy-zone”, no matter where I’ve lived. It’s so important to have your own little corner where you can read, relax and listen to music.

In fact, I’ve just moved again and will make sure to apply your other tips, too. 🙂

  7. Thank you for this post! 🙂 I wish we had followed one of your tips, and cleared out things we did not use for years before moving. Now, they are sitting in our bonus room in boxes taking up space.
You gave great tips, and I hope people take them to heart! 🙂
