The benefits of Coconut Oil reach far beyond what one might believe it to to be.

Coconut oil is made of approximately 90% saturated fat. It is also interesting to note that 50 percent of the fat is a health-boosting medium chain fatty acid. These medium chain fatty acids are caprylic acid, capric acid, nd lauric acid.

The single two most abundant sources of lauric acid are breast milk and coconuts.

Lauric acid is antibacterial, antiviral and is the most potent antimicrobial saturated fatty acid.

Medium chain fatty acids help you to lose fat and do not require energy for absorption as other fats do. For this reason, it is beneficial for people who are malnourished.

Medium chain fatty acids are not readily stored as fat. Additionally,  they are easier to digest than other fatty acids. Finally they provide energy to the body without any blood sugar spike. Consequently, this makes it a great addition to the diet of diabetics, and pre-diabetics.

In fact, the sweet smelling oil, that will remind you of the tropics, is high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

The benefits and uses of coconut oil are plentiful.

  1. Improves memory, energy and endurance.
  2. Reduces symptoms of some diseases.
  3. Destroys bad bacteria and candida.
  4. Increases “healthy” HDL cholesterol and converts “bad” LDL cholesterol.
  5. Clear Urinary Tract Infections.
  6. Protects the liver from damage.
  7. Reduces inflammation and arthritis issues.
  8. Boosts immunity.
  9. Improves skin conditions.
  10. Improves Oral Health. You can read about Oil Pulling and the benefits HERE.
  11. Slows aging.
  12. Balance hormones.
  13. Improves hair quality.
  14. Helps with weight loss.
  15. Is a great lube and, therefore, improves sexual enjoyment as Organic Coconut Oil is a wonderful lube.

Buy organic extra virgin coconut oil. Keep one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom.

Coconut Oil in the bedroom will be of extra special benefit.

Choose an oil that is not refined or processed as coconut oil can lose many of its benefits through these processes.  In my opinion, Nutiva Coconut Oil is among the best choices.

What is your opinion? Do you use coconut oil now? Will you in the future? What do you want to learn more about?

    Hey Elise,
    great post here!

Indeed, coconut oil has a lot of benefits, and should present in our diet for sure.

    Thanks for sharing

  2. Hi Elise. Coconut oil makes me smile. It was not that long ago that coconut oil was considered to be the fast track to a heart attack. Now it’s the oil to worship.

I actually use coconut oil for oral health. I have fought periodontal disease since I was a teenager. A friend recently recommended coconut oil pulling. I’m not as regular with it as I would like, but I have a dental appointment this week. Hope my gums are looking better.

Thanks for sharing this information on coconut oil.

    1. I love coconut oil for oil pulling. Many people also like sesame oil for this same purpose.

It is interesting how research comes out and we realize things that we were told are bad and things that we are told were good are bad (cigarettes are a great example of this.)

  3. I absolutely love coconut oil

Great article Dr Elise… I didn’t know coconut oil and breast milk were the main providers of lauric acid.

I use it for mouth health a lot and in my tea or coffee, plus of course I cook with it

    Such a powerhouse

    To Great Success

    Mary
