Learn To Be A More Independent Person
This exclusive report includes powerful tips to help you to learn how to be more independent.
I have also included 3 actionable steps that you can take right away. Additionally, I have included a list of suggested reading for those looking for even more information.
While you certainly should feel comfortable asking others for help when needed it is also important not to become a burden.
The more independent you are, the less you have to rely on others. This gives you the freedom to live.
The following tips can help move towards a more independent life.
Have emergency money on hand
As simple as this sounds, if you find yourself in an emergency that requires a good chunk of money, what will you do if you don’t have it? You will likely call up friends or family members. This puts you in a position of owing them. Set aside ten percent of your salary every pay period. This can be used to build up your emergency fund.
Always learn new skills.
If you don’t keep up with your skills, you will have to rely on others who are up-to-date with theirs. Most people don’t know everything there is to know. However, if you are on a constant learning path you will always be able to thrive.
If you truly want to become independent, consider starting a business.
Many people feel they can do better than the companies they work for. If you can make it happen for yourself, you will have the freedom to be your own boss.
For those who don’t want to start a new business, you can still take steps to increase your independence at work.
For instance, you should try to delegate several of your tasks. If you are not at a manager’s level, you may need to negotiate your position. For instance, you could teach someone a skill in exchange for him or her taking on some of your responsibilities.
Increase your network.
Attend a networking event at least once per quarter. You can arrange one yourself or you can attend one that is already scheduled. Once you develop your network, reach out to the network at least once per month, even if it’s just for a quick hello.
Stay out of trouble.
This seems obvious, but if you get arrested and have to spend time in jail, you lose your independence. Being incarcerated is difficult to shake even after you are released. People don’t believe this could ever happen to them. However, they start with small infractions, and as they get away with them, they increase the level. Sometimes, they find themselves in situations that are difficult to reverse until it’s too late.

Al great tips and yes we need to learn everyday to love ourselves as well. It is like a muscle, it needs to be trained and worked.
Funny, so many things about being an entrepreneur can take away your feeling of independence. Like relying on others to support you during the startup phase and aren’t making any money. Depending on friends and family to help spread the word about your services or even use them. Depending on technology to stay stable enough for you to adopt and perfect its potential.
Sometimes independence is just about needing less and finding ways to do that 🙂
Great points.
I love the point about starting your own business. I have felt so much more in control and Independent since starting my business 3 years ago.
YES!!! It certainly can build you up in a most spectacular way.
So much isn’t taught to us in life, in school and in general.
If only the educational system was so focused on teaching children important life skills as children it would change the course of the future. People would know how to be independent, manage money better and overall life and how to create the life they love. Great blog, great tips!
Thank you very much, Kate. Yes, a school should include life skills. Home Ec was a useful class that few take nowadays.
This is a great article! I especially love the first tip – have emergency money on hand. My dad was a big proponent of this and I think it’s a good idea to have money set aside if you need it – especially at night when the banks are closed. Thanks for the ideas!
I was not taught that when I was growing up. When I moved to Earthquake country I learned it very quickly.
Great tips here. One I’d like to add:
Learn to love yourself. When we’re sure of ourselves and show ourselves love, we have more confidence in who we are and our abilities. We then learn not to depend on what others think about us .
Thank you. That is the perfect addition.
Great…!! that’s great advice, I read and also saw your every post, nice article very useful your post Thank you so much for sharing this and the information provided.
I am glad that you found it of use.
Great job Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dr. Elise
You’ve got a great post here.
I fully agree with you on all the points you raised about being independent.
One point I would like to add is we should learn to budget and manage our resources. Sometimes when we make the mistake of exhausting our resources without making provision for a raining day. We would have no choice but to depend on others for our needs.
Thanks for sharing.
You make a great point. Learning how to budget and then sticking to that budget is very important. Not only will this help us to prepare for a rainy day it can also help us avoid the rain in the first place.
Totally agree with your tips! Definitely starting my own blog/brand has helped me achieve more independence and I don’t have to rely as much on others for approval. I can’t agree more with your tips! Keep rocking!
You keep rocking too. I am thrilled to hear when people find what they were looking for.
Great ideas for learning how to ramp up our personal independence. Taking responsibility for ourselves is one of the most liberating life lessons we can learn.
Edward
Thank you. Personal responsibility is so empowering.
Great tips! I especially like the one to “learn more skills.” I think this is so important all through life!
I have a feeling that you love to learn new things just as much as I do.
great post! I am going through a difficult time right now and I think being independent makes you happier and stronger, so thank you so much for the tips!
You are very welcome. I hope that you are able to work through the difficulty. Your network is here for you if you need anything.
Totally agree with all the tips. Am already using some of these tips in my life like always ensuring I have emergency money to take care of anything that may come up unexpected, or learning new skills to keep up with the changing world among others like networking with the right people etc. Thanks.
Love your tips! Having emergency money stored somewhere is very important – you never know when you will be on your own! Thanks for sharing at The Blogger’s Pit Stop!
I absolutely agree with having an emergency fund. I have heard so many stories where things happen out of the blue and its so sad to hear about when you are not prepared. Great tips!
It really si horrific. I have seen it quite a few times here in California with the mudslides and wildfires that we have had recently.
Nice article! I agree with you that one should learn to be an independent person. I guess one of the most important point to keep in mind is to be emotionally strong. When one is emotionally strong, he/she can become independent.
Also, all the points mentioned above are important and helpful. Thanks for sharing this information! 🙂
Great comment. Emotional strength can help us through almost anything.
Great post! I love your ideas:)

Thank you. I am glad that yu have enjoyed it.
Awesome! The feeling of independence is pretty awesome! Some times I’m too independent and forget to include the feelings of others in my decisions. I need to learn some balance between independence and being a team player
Great point. Balance is very important.
Interesting points! It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling powerless when it seems like there’s nothing you can do. I like that you’ve broken the steps down into manageable pieces and I love your list of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do!
Thank you, I agree that when we feel as if we have no control over something we also let our power go.
