Healthy Oral Health Habits For Seniors are just as important as healthy oral health habits are for babies and everyone in between.

Everyone – from babies to seniors – needs to have a handle on their teeth. Looking after your teeth is a must if you want to feel confident about your smile and that means developing healthy oral habits. As you get older, you need to care for your teeth more and more, and as a senior, there are habits that you need to adopt to ensure that you can continue to care for those teeth of yours. 

 

The right oral health habits continued through life keep your gums healthy and your teeth strong.

The more you do now the better!

 

From bleeding gums to painful and loose teeth, your oral health matters. Taking the time to look after your mouth now will prevent you from dealing with worse issues later on. The last thing that you want to deal with in your senior years is poor oral health. Therefore, you need these good oral health habits to get you going!

 

Brush and floss every day.

 

Something you’ve done since you had teeth is brush them, but getting on top of that and using the right toothpastes and floss regularly is important. Brushing will prevent cavities and you’ll be able to set an example for your grandkids, too. Flossing will help you to get the bacteria between your teeth every day and you can ask your dentist about that. 

 

Clean your dentures.

 

Bacteria will stick to your teeth and that means that you need to clean your dentures every single day. There are specific cleaners that will help you to manage your dentures. Don’t use natural toothpastes or household cleaners for this as they can damage the dentures.

Visit the dentist.

 

Keep seeing your dentist. Visit the dentist at least twice a year to ensure that you are staying on top of your oral care. Getting regular checkups can help to ensure that your teeth are not decaying from medicines or similar. As well,  you can talk to your dentist about how to look after your teeth.

 

Use Flouride

 

Drinking fluoridated water and using toothpastes with this ingredient may help to prevent tooth decay. You want your teeth to feel as clean as possible. Therefore, do what you can to make tooth care an important part of your life. 

Quit smoking.

 

Smoking can increase problems with gum disease and decay. As well,  smoking can prevent healing from trauma such as can be experienced if you lose a tooth.
