Healthy aging is an important life focus.

 

So that is easy to say, but what goes into healthy aging?

If you are getting older then you might start to notice your health declining. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about. However, occasionally it can be something to worry about and may warrant a trip to the doctor. If you look after yourself from the start then there is less risk of you suffering from one of the age-related conditions. These can include but are not limited to strokes, diabetes, and heart disease. 

 

Take Time Out

 

Life can be busy at times, you might find yourself dashing from one place to another. This may be the case if you are a parent or you have multiple jobs. Life doesn’t slow down until retirement age so it is important you don’t suffer from burnout too soon. There are ways to avoid this happening, one example is taking time out from your busy schedule to focus on yourself. You need to have this time out as it is a way for you to recharge your batteries and feel refreshed every so often. 

 

You are not a bad person for wanting to take a break from life for a bit. A bit of rest and relaxation can go a long way in helping you feel healthier and more energized. If you have children then perhaps you could ask family or friends to look after them one evening a month so you can have some time to yourself. If you are working hard at work then consider booking a day or long weekend off so you can recharge those batteries. 

 

Check Your Diet

 

What you eat is important to your healthy aging lifestyle. The types of food you consume all have a purpose for your body. For instance, carbohydrates give you energy and fruits give you vital nutrients. When you prepare meals you should aim to include at least one of each food group on your plate. If you are unsure, these are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. Without these, you can feel very tired and lethargic. 

 

Alongside your diet, you need to ensure you are drinking adequate amounts of water. Your body is made up of about 60% water, and this is lost through sweating, breathing, and peeing throughout the day. The water that is lost needs to be replaced. You should aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, this equates to about 2 liters. 

 

Get Regular Checkups

 

It is important as you age to attend regular checkups with your doctor whenever you are called to them. These may be annually or every six months. Try not to put these off as the doctor can spot things that you might miss. You will be invited for screenings at various ages throughout your adult life. These are to check for different cancers and conditions. You can of course keep an eye on yourself for these conditions. Checking your body for lumps is key to finding these things early. For example, you could have something like soft tissue sarcoma

 

It is also essential to monitor your hearing and eyesight when you age. This can decline pretty quickly once you reach the age of 55. Attending regular optician appointments will ensure conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts are caught early enough to treat. If you notice your eyes or ears deteriorating then be sure to make an appointment straight away. 

 

Sleep 

 

Sleep is essential to your functioning as a normal human being. If you haven’t had enough sleep then this can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, and forgetfulness. You should be aiming for around six to eight hours of sleep each night, this is enough for your body to heal and recharge overnight. Remember, avoid caffeine and blue light before going to bed. You might not realize this but it can affect your quality of sleep as well as the number of hours you are getting. 

 

How well you are sleeping should always be at the forefront of your mind. If you are waking up more exhausted than you were when you went to sleep then there is a problem somewhere. If you are getting eight hours of disrupted sleep then you won’t be reaching the deep sleep stage which is where you wake up feeling refreshed. There are several things that can prevent this from happening. You could be uncomfortable and your mattress could be causing a disturbance. If your mattress is older than eight years then it may be time to think about replacing it.
