Common Health Concerns In Old Age

It is no secret that as you age your health can deteriorate. The coughs and colds you might have brushed off in your younger days take longer to shift. As well, things start to ache a little bit more. You also may become more susceptible to illnesses as your body becomes more frail.

Aging is a fact of life that we all want. The alternative is not!

Creating awareness around the common health concerns in old age is the opportunity to be forearmed. The knowledge and know-how can help you to live as long and healthy a life as possible.

Throughout your life, you can take proactive steps to look after your health, be it from lifestyle choices or a regular health screening. There are also advancements that allow physicians to determine the best medication for you based on your genetics, as championed by Brad Schaeffer of MedComp Sciences. Knowing the possible health concerns, how to help keep them at bay, and what to do if you find yourself suffering with them are some of the best ways to remain healthy.

Here are some common health concerns to be mindful of.

Eye health

As you age your eye health naturally deteriorates and poor vision or eye health can lead to other risk factors such as an increase in falls, driving accidents, or misuse of medication. Ensuring you pay close attention to your eye health throughout your life will help ensure you protect your vision and eyes as you age.

Hearing loss

Your hearing is another of your senses that naturally depletes as you age, which again can lead to other health complaints and have a negative impact on your quality of life. There are lots of advancements in audiology and the sooner you take action on any slight hearing deficits you may notice the greater the effect it will have on your hearing and overall health.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a growing concern in all age groups but it is especially common in the over 50s. It is a very serious health complaint. However, the good news is that if you suffer from Type 2 Diabetes there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. These steps include increasing the exercise you take, eating healthily, stopping smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Osteoporosis

Sadly suffers from osteoporosis are often unaware that they are living with it. It usually materializes when something happens, such as a broken bone.

Hundreds of thousands of people are thought to be living with osteoporosis unknowingly. Click To Tweet

Osteoporosis is a progressive condition that results in bones becoming weaker and more fragile as you age. This means they are prone to breaking easily. It is also understood that typically osteoporosis affects women more than men. One of the best ways to help protect yourself against osteoporosis is to take proactive action in your youth. Regular and gentle strength training is one of the most effective ways to keep your bones strong and healthy into old age.

This is countries like Australia have a good aged-care facility to help our aging community to stay healthy.
I am taking every steps I needed in order to enjoy my future aging years!

  2. I personally grew up with my grandma and i do agree with all of these conditions you have mentioned… My grandma eventually loss her vision because of her Glaucoma.. Apparently she is too old for the treatment.. I guess it is very important that we are aware of all these while we are still young and fit.. We can change our lifestyle and our diet early to prevent or at least lower the risk of getting them

  3. I’m starting to have creaky bones, lol. It sounds like a bowl of Rice Krispies when I wake up in the morning. I’m not sure what it means, but I have been looking into it here and there to try and see if it is a normal thing.

  4. Diabetes is a common health issue, My dad has one. It’s quite hard for him but there are things we can do to prevent it such as the things you mention. Healthy exercise, no smoking and eating healthy food

  5. Thank you so much for sharing this. I worry about my in-laws because they deal with some of these but we are proactive in helping them take care of themselves.

  6. I’m most worried about osteoporosis for myself lately. I found out this year that I am allergic to dairy so I’ve been working on other ways to get enough calcium in my diet. I do workout almost every morning, though, so hopefully that helps.

    1. The good news is that you can get calcium in other ways but I do understand the challenge. If I may, I would also suggest that you look at your overall vitamins and see if you need to supplement any.

  7. So good to know about common health problems. Especially for my mom I always want to prepare myself so I can help her instantly.

  8. It really is so important that we become generally aware of these conditions as those close to us start to age. Not only can this knowledge help us in our efforts to support them to lead the best lives possible, but it also can forewarn ourselves to be prepared when our own age gets to that stage in life.
