Did you know that certain foods can boost your mood?

Science teaches us that some foods are better at raising serotonin levels than others. To help you create a mood boosting diet, focus on these ideas.

Fermented Foods

If you want to boost your mood, make sure that you eat plenty of fermented foods. Examples of fermented foods are sauerkraut, yogurt, kimchi and kefir. The healthy bacteria in these foods can help to boost serotonin levels. Kombucha is a tasty drink which is also made by the fermented process. If you’re feeling a bit creative it can be fun to make your own kombucha at home.

Green veggies

Green vegetables are packed with nutrients and vitamins, eating lots of green veggies is a great way to boost your mood.  Focus on nutrient dense veggies like kale, spinach, waitress, lettuce and chard. These veggies contain plenty of magnesium, studies show that consuming magnesium is a great way to raise serotonin levels. Magnesium has also been shown to help with sleep. If you struggle to sleep at night it can be a good idea to take a magnesium supplement before you go to bed.

Dark chocolate

Eating dark chocolate is a fantastic way to boost your mood! Why not check out a few recipes that use chocolate? There are plenty out there! Collecting new recipes is a great way to experiment with food and be more aware of your diet. Try apps, cookbooks or online articles. There’s plenty you can learn online whether it’s how to temper chocolate correctly or chocolate truffle recipes.

Fatty fish

Fatty fish is one of the best mood boosting foods out there, if you’re keen to lift your spirits try getting more fish in your diet. Fish is a great source of protein, and there are plenty of health benefits to eating fish including:

  • Packed with healthy nutrients including vitamin D.
  • Omega-3 helps to protect the body from free radicals.
  • Studies have indicated that eating fish can improve the symptoms of depression.
  • Can reduce your risk of stroke or heart attack.

Mood boosting supplements

There are lots of different plant-based supplements which can help to boost your mood. Try supplements like St John’s Wort, chamomile, valerian, passion flower or CBD. These supplements can help you improve your mood and sleep better at night. Remember, if you’re taking any medication it’s a good idea to discuss any new supplements with a medical professional.

Further ideas

Improving your diet isn’t the only way to boost your mood, there are plenty of ways to raise serotonin levels and improve your health. Make sure that you get plenty of exercise and enough sleep. Laughter is a great way to boost your mood, or you could try getting out amongst nature. When you take the time to support your body and mind you’ll reduce your stress levels and feel much happier. Try setting yourself a few health goals to see you through the year.
