Identifying our mistakes, and then learning from them, is one of the most effective ways for us to grow as individuals.

Mistakes are often viewed in a negative light, but they present huge opportunities for self-improvement.

In my life, I have made many life-altering decisions from choosing to graduate from high school at 15 years old, going on to University, becoming a wife and later a mom, to making various career choices along the way.

Even now, I am still making these types of decisions… I mean seriously,  I really am!

I have chosen to further my education and earn more certifications than any person could possibly need and to bring my education even further by earning two doctoral degrees (Ph.D. Natural Medicine/Naturopathic Psychology and Doctor of Naturopathy).

I made this decision while in my 40′s!

What?

Why?

The answer for me was simple, to be accepted into these programs, to be able to study that which I find so fascinating and to earn these advanced degrees (you know, because one was not enough) absolutely makes my heart sing!

I love when my heart sings!

Of course, with the simple truth also came some complicated questions.

I am a writer and even when beginning my advanced studies already had a growing practice and so I worried, “Can I do both?”

I am a mother, a mother who made the decision many years ago to be a SAHM. I mean, granted, I did morph into a WAHM and eventually a mom who worked outside the home.

However, this was bringing things to a whole new level.

While the kids were older (13, 15, 17 at the time) and quite self-sufficient, I wondered if that really meant that they needed me any less.

I am a wife and in that, I asked myself, “Is he really good with all of this?”

He states that we will work everything out and that we can handle it.

But then I took a step back and thought about The Decisions We Make.

I asked myself some important questions.

  • Do I deserve to be my own person?
  • Do I deserve to nourish that which excites me?
  • Why do we, as women, tend to push our needs aside?
  • Can my family handle this change?

Well, this whole decision was one made years ago… now my kids are 19, 21 and 23. So let me fill you in…

Were there some difficulties? Absolutely!

Has it been terrific? Yes, indeed.

Everyone has handled it.

The kids came to learn how I managed to graduate from high school at 15 and earn my first degree by age 17.

We have studied together and waited for test grades together.

My husband and my kids have stepped up and worked “it out.”

Perhaps they have not done so in the exact way that I would have, but they have. Giving up some control was an important part of the process.

I did not allow my fears to hold me back.

Through the years I have followed The Great Spirit inside of me to make decisions, easy and hard.

She has guided me well but every decision was not correct.

In some of these decisions I had to dig deep and look for the lesson but yet it was still not a mistake.

I love the decisions that were spot on even more, but any decision which propels you forward, whether from immediate success or learning a lesson, is always a positive.

A good life is filled with new decisions, new fears, and new hope. Click To Tweet

  1. Great, your post is helped me a lot. Thanks for the detailed info on this topic. It’s hard to find nowadays to know about the basics but you did it so much well. I would love to see more about it. Keep sharing and updated. Also share more posts with us. Thank you.

  2. I agree with this statement – The right decisions rock you to your core and allow you to fully step into your POWER! Also, we need to be optimistic at the same time. We have to believe in ourselves!

  3. Women do seem to put other people’s needs ahead of their own. Especially if it’s someone they love, but not even necessarily then!

  4. I agree that mistakes often bring enlightenment and lessons to make you a better person. You’ve made some excellent points in this article. I also feel like emotional intelligence and environment have a role in decision making. If you don’t have clarity or in space with support of positive people in your life, decision making can be skewed.

  5. You’ve given us a lot of great points in this article. We can apply them in our everyday lives, and it will help us think out of our comfort zone. Thank you!

  6. I really enjoyed this post. I always think of past decisions as the building blocks of my life. Some decisions don’t seem to give the desired result, of course, but I think they’re an integral part of what has built me to where I am today.

  7. You bring up some deep questions and you have a lot of good points, I loved reading this cuz it gave me a lot to think about.

  8. You are an inspiration to many. It is not an easy task to raise a family and still work towards achieving your own set goals. I can only wish I had the same level of drive and motivation as you!

  9. Decisions like these are not always easy to make. I especially like that you made these career moves in your 40’s- most people wouldn’t have the courage to move forward with life goals at that point.

  10. This was a great post. Decisions are what move us through life. Sometimes we see the result we want, and sometimes we don’t. But in the end, they always put us where we need to be eventually.

  11. It is a great article and I really needed to read it. I’m proud of you and your decisions. I’m 40 and I have 3 yo and 3 months kids and I feel so lost. Probably it is time to make a good decision.

  18. Thank you for sharing this. The title immediately caught my attention. Being decisive and not second-guessing my own decisions has been a struggle for me. Due to some recent situations beyond my control, I’ve been forced into more of a decision-making role. It’s not nearly as complicated as I made it out to be, and it’s brought about some interesting and positive results. Again, thanks for this entry.

    1. Sometimes we need to just go a bit outside of our comfort zone to realize our strengths. You sound like a strong person.

  19. Hi Elise,
A very inspiring post. In all the time I have known you, I never knew that you graduated at 15 and received your first degree at 17. You are an amazing and determined woman.

You are one of the people who have inspired me to move forward and start stepping into a new life for myself and like you mentioned, it is hard at times and even sometimes scary but I am doing it.

Thank you, my friend. You always inspire me and I congratulate you on your many accomplishments.
