Be Creative And Expand Your Possibilities

Creativity does not happen on demand. There is a process, especially if your creativity is blocked.

Priorities are short-term goals that you want to accomplish in an a specific and limited time period.

A priority should be a good mix of the things that you want to do and the things that you should do.

It is unrealistic to think that your entire priority list need only be filled with your desires as that is not the reality of life.

The reality of life includes deadlines, appointments and other things that must be taken care.

However, I also caution you against filling your list exclusively with what you should do. That will not motivate you and certainly won’t allow you to be creative.

Your daily and weekly priority list should include the fun stuff, the stuff that fires you up… the stuff that allows you to step fully into your POWER. Click To Tweet

So how will you find the time?

I often hear the concerns of  “I just do not have the time!” and  “There is not enough time in the day!” or “Who has the time?”

These concerns are valid but the truth of the matter is that you more than likely do have the time.

The problem is usually how we are spending the time.

Our time is allotted for the wrong thing, the priority is skewed or we just think that tasks will take less time than they actually do.

We must assess our time allowance, expenditure, and debt.

  1. Write out your daily schedule and your weekly schedule as you perceive it.
  2. Live the day and the week. While doing so write out what you are doing and the amount of time it is taking.
  3. Compare the two lists.

Is anything popping out at you?

Is there some area that your time was off?

Is there an activity that you thought would take ten minutes and it took 30?

Now think about how satisfied you are with how you spend your precious time… and it is precious!

What are the most important things in your life? Who are the most important people?

Your number one priority should be you.

We have such a hard time seeing that this needs to be the case. We feel selfish and as if so many other people need to come first.

A prime example of this is the fact that most parents feel that their children must come first but I encourage you to rethink this. If you do not take care of yourself, that is your physical, nutritional and mental state of being, then what do you actually have to give to your kids? Nothing!

If you take care of yourself then you are honoring yourself and your family. Click To Tweet

Set your priorities so that you are NUMBER ONE and then consider the following questions.

1. What is the most important thing in my life right now?

2. What would I want to spend more time on?

3. What would I want to spend less time on?

4. What areas need my attention now (school, health, relationship, business)?

Write down your activities in the order that feels most important to you.

This is your new list of priorities.

So tell me, what will you work on first?

  1. Hello Elise,

Thank you for this post. This is so important in our lives.

I’ve always wondered though, why does it take us such a long time to realize that we have to prioritize and do first the most important things in our lives?

This is so relevant in my life right now and I’m slowing making changes.

    Best,
    Sigrid

Thank you for putting the idea of planning vs reality in the tasks to be done. Although it might seem selfish to some first priority is to me. As stated how can I help others around me if I can’t help myself.

  3. Elise

Great post and so important to put yourself first and prioritize. It is way to easy to be distracted and then the day the week the month is gone.

    Thanks

    Andy

  4. Hello Elise ..
Great suggestions and post .. I try to start everyday with meditation, it centers me, gives me ideas, bring peace as well as energy into my life … very calming … I make LOTS of lists, and have notebooks just for ideas,,,

  5. Hey Elise

Creativity is a process your right.. i tend to find in the daytime I have a million and 1 thoughts going through my head..I really am going to have to start writing them down. Then I will remember them..My memory is so poor! Maybe you have a recipe to improve it?

  6. Hi Elise,

Thank you so much for this! I love the way you state we need to honor ourselves and how we need to keep ourselves as the number 1 priority in life. What’s the saying… When mama’s not good nobody’s good… something like that. As a mother, we tend to place our children as top priority but if I’m not well who’s going to take care of them. Thanks for the pep talk and reality check. I’m going to be taking care of myself starting NOW.

    Take care,
    Lillian

  7. Hi Elise,

This is my first time here. I found your blog from your comment on Donna’s blog. Nice to meet you. 🙂

I agree with you. We have to be creative in using time. By doing so, we can achieve more success. Sometimes I also feel I don’t have enough time, but everyone has the same amount of time, what’s the difference?

I think, focus is something which distinguishes it. Yes, if you focus on your initial goal, then we will feel our time become more effective. By the way, I like the list you created, Elise. Very helpful!

    Thanks for sharing, Elise.
    All the best for you!

    Regards,
    Nanda

    1. It is wonderful to meet you, as well. Thank you so much for visiting. I do hope that you will do so often.

you are right that we all have the same hours in the day but we also have different responsibilities, habits and processes. It is important to review how you use your time so as to see where you can streamline to get the very most out of your day. You are absolutely correct that focus is a huge part of this.

      All of the best,
      Elise

  8. Well said Elise. When I was coaching and someone whined to me about not doing something because they didn’t have time what I heard was “it just wasn’t important enough.” To me it’s not about time management but priority management. Now personally, I’m great at prioritizing my work and creative projects – the problem is too often I end up last on the list. I’m working on pushing me up the list this year. 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. Hi Elise,

You have given some sage advice here on this post! We do have to be creative with our time. If we don’t take time for ourselves, it only leads to overwhelm. I’ve been though that before and had to learn that lesson the hard way. Never want to do that again!

I like the list you have provided to actually compare what we need to do. I’m a list person myself and can resonate with this so well.

    Thanks!

    -Donna
