Bouncing Back From Bad Habits

Bad habits can sometimes grow with us through life, and that can be a problem. After all, the reason that these habits are defined as ‘bad’ is that they lead to either no worthwhile outcome or a net negative outcome. For instance, smoking may relieve stress for some people temporarily, but after a while the addiction is the process you need to soothe, not your stress, and of course it can have tremendously negative effects on our overall health over time.

Much advice is out there regarding how to kick bad habits, how to avoid the constant withdrawal/relapse cycle, and the benefit of leaning on friends and family when you need them most in this regard. But it’s rare for us to hear much about the aftercare necessities we need to keep in mind in order to repair some of the damage done. For instance, in our smoking example, it might be that opting for upscale dental hygiene care will provide us the means to restore and remove the damage done by such a habit over time.

In this post, we’ll discuss other alternatives that may help:

Skincare & Treatment

Bad habits can sometimes leave physical effects on us, especially if they’ve been gestating for some time. For instance, the aforementioned dental work can give you a new lease in your appearance and dental health, while proper skincare may help you once again exfoliate the skin, and treat it right, healing sun damage, the effects of alcohol, and help you look much younger and healthier again. That kind of confidence-building is hard to understate because you’ll feel ten times better knowing that you’re glowing.

For bad habits relating to alcohol or addiction of any kind, it’s worth exploring the additional treatments that might be available. A residential rehab, for example, is a great option for those who are really struggling to bounce back.

Mental Health Care

While a habit may have gone, it can be healthy to focus on your mental wellbeing so that it doesn’t creep back into your daily decision-making. Seeing a counselor or speaking to a doctor about anxiety or other issues you might be facing, especially at sensitive times such as post-pregnancy, can make a massive difference. If you can replace bad habits with good habits, and sustain the mental wellbeing efforts you need to thrive, you’ll be in a much more favorable position going forward, and appreciate your forward progress like no one else can. This will also give you wisdom, which is important for growth.

Social Renewal

It’s also true that often, bad habits can bring bad social connections with them. This might simply be those who you attended a smoke break at work with everyday, or those whom you used to drink with. Cutting out bad influences from your life can help you renew yourself and find a better scene, even if you’re still on good terms with some people but keep them at arm’s length. It’s perfectly fine to renew yourself in this way if it helps, and can aid you in making lasting change while also improving your influences and sense of general wellbeing.

  1. Thanks for this! I like this saying: “Bad habits are easy to form, but hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form, but easy to live with”. It’s so true

  2. Ah yes! These are very practical ways we can go to ensure bad habits don’t keep resurfacing! I am in most support for mental health because I’ve tried it before and it has worked for me.

  3. I agree with you, there are some things bad habits do and you mentioned all important ones. Thank you for sharing! I will keep that in mind because I’m not doing any at the moment.
