7 Bad Habits That Can Severely Affect Your Health

Living a healthy lifestyle is within our reach. Yes, you heard it correctly. Healthy living is a time-honored commitment and not a flash-in-the-pan type of trend. But there are some steps that you can take right away to make your today more robust, better than yesterday and floor the road to healthy tomorrow, too!

Here’s the checklist of bad habits that we don’t notice in a day to day life, but severely affect our health.

Eating Beyond Capacity:

If it becomes your habit — even though it is a healthy meal– you will probably gain excess weight. The weight once increased is hard to decrease. Check out how much hunger you have before cooking meals and cut down any additional snacks you eat in front of the TV.

Eating Fast:

We get to see this everywhere. Some people eat so fast and seeing that makes me confuse if they chew the food correctly or not. Eating too quickly can affect the digestive system and leave you weak, less satisfied. The best way to eat food is to take smaller bites at a time and chew them properly.

Biting Nails:

Do you have the habit of biting nails all the time? If yes, then you must keep it aside as soon as possible. This habit can harm the skin nearby to your nail area as well as your teeth, which can cause infection. Besides this, you may also feel sick and get other illnesses by putting your nails, which usually carry bacteria, into your mouth.

If stress or diverted mind is the cause of this habit, then you should try things like meditation or breathing exercise to control it.

Cracking Knuckles:

Knuckles cracking doesn’t just irritate your co-workers and friends — but it may not be right for your bones, either. Have you ever heard about synovial fluid? It is a substance that keeps our joint movements smooth. The sound that comes after “cracking” knuckles is the result of small bubbles popping in that fluid. Thus, if you do it regularly, then you may face several problems over time which include weaker grip, swollen hands, etc.

In fact, repeatedly “cracking” various parts of your body can massively increase the likelihood that you’ll have to visit a chiropractor. Eventually, the cracking action could wear away your joints, leading to issues such as chronic pain and discomfort in the future.

Cheating on Sleep:

If you don’t provide your body adequate rest and sleep, then you are not only transforming yourself toward a daytime zombie –but also putting your health at risk of having depression, diabetes, heart disease, eye problems, and high blood pressure. And it can also affect your memory too. Fix a consistent sleep routine and adhere to it. Try to give 7 to 8 hours of rest to your body and mind.

Blasting Headphones:

The sound is scaled in decibels. A typical conversation roughly takes place at around 60 decibels. Thus, it is desirable to keep the headphone volume under 75 (nearly as noisy as a regular vacuum cleaner.) Furthermore, remove the headphones for about 5 to 10 minutes after every hour of active listening. It limits the loss of brain tissues and also saves us from a hearing loss.

Surfing Before Sleeping:

Not blaming the waves or the Internet. I am talking about the “blue light” transferred by electronic devices such as TVs, laptops or computers, and mobile phone. This light and its brightness can mess-up a salient, natural sleep. Also, studies prove that too much exposure to any type of night-time light might lead to obesity, diabetes, stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Make yourself feel relaxed before bed. Open up a magazine or book (not E-books) if you want to read.

It’s all about the bad habits that can seriously affect your health.

Oh my! This makes me unhealthy at 4 out of 7. I work till midnight, surf before sleeping, eat fast and excessively to be able to return to work immediately and to make up for lost sleep. Great reminders! I think I have to adjust with sleeping time because the rest of the habits arise from lack of sleep.

    1. You have already done the most important thing which is to recognize that there is a problem. You can change what you need to.

  2. This is great! So many people don’t recognize what is bad or good for them, so helpful blogs like this really help us begin to notice and recognize how we can change for the better.

  3. Haha… sounds so familiar…. I guess everyone is subsconsciously the battle with the smart phones just before sleeping, me included. It is so automatic for us all to pick up that phone and start surfing mindless for a while before dozing. That’a how habits work. And knowing how they work is the key to breaking them and become healthy and productive again. Habits = Trigger + Routine + Rewards. In my humble opinion, becoming aware of your habit triggers is the key to success. Many of us do not even know these triggers exist, no wonder, bad habits rule our lives. For example, why do I watch TV late into the night? I realize it was because of the comfy couch in my living the moment I get home. Seeing that comfy couch triggered my mind to start working my night routines towards TV. I change that by putting a book on the comfy couch before I leave for work. Once I get back, guess whats the first thing I saw? Yes, my comfy couch, but this time there was also my favourite book which serves as a reminder for me to work instead of watch TV. It is a slow battle, but it can be done if you know the insights of you own habits.

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights. I love what you have said, especially how awareness can make a difference.

  4. I am guilty of surfing before sleeping! I know it is bad for me and I have been trying to break the habbit! Instead I have been reading 🙂

Eeeekkkk! I do several of the things on this list. I have been popping my knuckles for as long as I can remember. I’m also a nail-biter. I guess I better stop doing both of those things!

    1. A great way to stop biting your nails is to get (or give yourself) a manicure. It makes it much less appetizing.

  6. Ha, I’m guilty of all of these. Perfect timing for this post though, at the beginning of the year when everyone is trying to improve on themselves.

    1. I would be thrilled if people took one per week (or longer if needed) and really tuned into improving in that area.
